Phoenix Week Three

Last summer, I went to Arizona on a summer mission trip. I posted my newsletters on WordPress before I decided to put everything here on Wix. My summer in Toronto is already up, and I am excited to be reading through last summer's adventures again with you.

SUNDAY, June 11 TO SATURDAY, JUNE 17

From the original blog post:

MultiplyPHX and GoTEN

For this summer, I am an intern for two different ministries- MultiplyPHX and GoTEN. The main team that I came here to work with is Multiply Phoenix, which is the church planting team. They have partnered with GoTEN, which in Phoenix connects churches to the local refugees.

MY SCHEDULE:

Mondays, Wednesdays, and Friday mornings are dedicated to MultiplyPHX with Kyle, Tyler, and Cody. Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Friday afternoons are dedicated to the GoTEN ministry. Saturdays are saved for resting, and Sundays are for church.

more specifically…

With MultiplyPHX, we are focused on making Jesus known in the northern part of Phoenix. The team likes to say, “in Anthem as it is in heaven.” The mission is to seek the Kingdom first, engage the city, make disciples, and see a church planted here. Collectively, the team will pray over every home in the city through prayer walking the neighborhoods. Also, they have weekly community groups (alternating between co-ed and split) on Wednesday nights. For Sundays, we attend our sending church CrossLife. As a part of our internship, Kyle shows us resources he has and is using in church planting and going through a guide for disciple making. We will also make attempts at meeting the community through sports and being out in the city. Furthermore, my goal with MultiplyPHX is to soak up as much knowledge and wisdom on living obediently to God as a Christian with a family in an urban context while mobilizing others and moving towards a church planted.

At GoTEN‘s Phoenix training center, the staff collaborates with churches in order to facilitate discipleship relationships among unreached people. GoTEN stands for Go To Every Nation, so their center is in the middle of where internationals live. They host sewing classes (where refugees create goods from donated materials, check out their website here), free English classes, and childcare for parents in either of those classes. As an intern for GoTEN, I will attend each of the mentioned ministries once a week. During my time at the sewing class, I find myself most useful assisting with administrative activities. For English class, I will be paired up with one of the students as they learn and practice English. With the childcare, I just play with kids! There will also be two training classes a week on a variety of topics, which is what I do homework for. In addition, I will be joining in on home visits with the local internationals, which is scheduled for Friday afternoons (but I also have been Tuesday and Thursday). Overall, my goal with GoTEN is just to learn more about the variety of cultures here and how to best be transparent with my testimony in a way that is appropriate to different worldviews.

Next week, my schedule with GoTEN will look different since they are having their quarterly break from classes. The staff members talked about scheduling more home visits! It’s so interesting to me that I get to experience different cultures within one city. I just hope that my next visits don’t have as much spicy food…
